Arthritis, arthrosis, gout: why do joints hurt?

Joint problems can appear at any age. Most often they manifest as pain and stiffness of movement. Some pathologies are also accompanied by swelling or edema, redness of the skin around the joint, and an increase in local temperature.

– Musculoskeletal diseases arise for various reasons, – says Evgeny Akimov. – For example, arthrosis is associated with wear and tear of joints, arthritis – with inflammatory processes in them, gout – with metabolic disorders.

Also, according to the expert, joint diseases can be caused by age-related changes, infections, excess weight, injuries, a sedentary lifestyle, or, conversely, excessive physical load.

How to reduce pain?

Typically, patients are prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve pain. They act quickly, but the doctor emphasizes that such medications have side effects: long-term use can provoke gastritis or ulcers, as well as gastrointestinal bleeding. However, the risks can be reduced.

– "For example, in cases of arthrosis or other degenerative joint conditions, supplements based on methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and glucosamine can be considered," says Evgeny Akimov. "Together, these substances provide both analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. This can reduce the need for NSAIDs or replace them with gentler forms, such as topical gels or patches. However, the therapy should be prescribed by a doctor, as combination regimens may not be suitable for all patients."Author: Elena Parukova, photo: Smartpress
